Network Operations Engineer Contract Length: 12 months + potential extension Location: Austin, Texas or San Antonio, Texas (Hybrid - On Site and Telework)
Summary If you are a seasoned network professional who takes pride in keeping complex enterprise environments running smoothly and securely, this is the role for you. You will own day-to-day network operations across two Texas locations, working in a high-assurance environment where security, reliability, and operational discipline matter. This is not a design-and-hand-off role. You will be hands-on, embedded in the operation, and counted on to keep things running while driving continuous improvement. You will work alongside agency staff, managed service providers, and site teams who will rely on your expertise to solve problems, close gaps, and maintain a network that supports critical business operations.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Deep hands-on experience administering enterprise LAN, WAN, wireless, VPN, and internet connectivity across multi-site organizations
Fluency in routing, switching, DNS, DHCP, firewall management, and network performance monitoring in environments where downtime is not an option
Security-first mindset with demonstrated experience in network segmentation, least-privilege access design, and controlled change practices
Proven ability to coordinate with carriers, managed service providers, hardware vendors, and internal support teams to drive issues to resolution
Experience supporting endpoint, collaboration, identity, or cloud and SaaS dependencies that affect network performance and user productivity
Familiarity with Palo Alto, Juniper, Cisco, Aruba, or Meraki enterprise platforms preferred
Experience with Microsoft 365, Entra ID, zero trust, or identity-governed remote access concepts
Prior experience in Texas public sector, critical infrastructure, or regulated environments such as CJIS, TAC 202, or NIST highly valued
Network+, CCNA, PCNSA, JNCIA, CISSP, or equivalent certification a plus though demonstrated experience speaks just as loudly
Duties/Responsibilities:
Own day-to-day administration, monitoring, and troubleshooting of LAN, WAN, wireless, firewall, DNS, DHCP, and remote access services across Austin and San Antonio
Maintain a secure network environment through disciplined segmentation, access control, configuration management, and change implementation
Serve as a reliable point of coordination between agency staff, service providers, carriers, and site support teams to keep services available and issues resolved
Keep documentation, network diagrams, asset inventory, and capacity planning current and accurate
Manage service tickets with urgency and clarity ensuring systems are synchronized
Support vulnerability remediation and ensure configurations stay aligned with NIST, TAC 202, and agency security requirements
Participate in after-hours maintenance windows and assist with incident response, cutover planning, and migration support as needed
Contribute to a network environment that is not just functional but continuously improving
