Senior Cloud Database Engineering Lead Contract Length: 12 months+ Location: Northern Virginia (Telework)
We are seeking an experienced Senior Cloud Database Engineering Lead to architect, manage, and modernize enterprise database environments across hybrid and cloud platforms. This role provides technical leadership for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server environments, with a strong focus on Azure cloud migrations, database reliability, and security compliance in highly regulated settings. The ideal candidate is a technically grounded leader who thrives at the intersection of engineering excellence, cloud transformation, and operational discipline, and who can lead 24/7 operations teams supporting mission-critical systems.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience
Substantial hands-on experience with Oracle Database (10g through 19c) and Microsoft SQL Server, including RAC, Data Guard, RMAN, and OEM
Strong proficiency with Microsoft Azure (IaaS and PaaS), hybrid cloud architecture, and Azure networking, storage, monitoring, and logging
Linux (RHEL or Oracle Linux) and Windows Server administration
Scripting proficiency in Bash/Unix shell and PowerShell
Demonstrated experience with federal security compliance frameworks including FedRAMP, FISMA, NIST 800-53, and STIG, including STIG vulnerability remediation and POA&M management
Exposure to Oracle to PostgreSQL migration tooling
Background in highly regulated industries such as government, healthcare, or financial services
Active U.S. Government security clearance preferred; eligibility to obtain one will be considered
Key Responsibilities:
Design, deploy, and maintain enterprise Oracle and MSSQL Server database platforms, including high availability and disaster recovery architectures using Data Guard, RAC, and replication frameworks
Optimize database performance through indexing, partitioning, query tuning, and capacity planning, and maintain architecture documentation and operational runbooks
Lead large-scale database migrations from on-premises to Microsoft Azure and manage hybrid cloud environments across Azure GovCloud and enterprise data centers
Implement cloud monitoring, automation, and scaling strategies to ensure long-term platform reliability and cost efficiency
Ensure compliance with FedRAMP, FISMA, NIST 800-53, and STIG standards, lead security remediation efforts, and support audits and vulnerability assessments
Oversee 24/7 production operations, including proactive monitoring, alerting, backup and recovery management using RMAN and Data Pump, and database patching and lifecycle management
Lead and mentor cross-functional engineering teams, establish incident and change management processes, and collaborate with infrastructure, application, and security teams to ensure integrated platform reliability
